Many individuals have a difficult time understanding the difference between a BLS certification and a basic CPR certification. BLS stands for “basic life support” and is course that was developed by the American Heart Association. BLS is basically the same thing as CPR except that it is specifically designed for healthcare providers.

A BLS certification is required for the following individuals:

• Emergency Trained Technicians

• Lifeguards

• Nurses

• Pharmacists

• Doctors

• Dentists

If you work in the medical field, you will be required to be BLS certified.

BLS Modules

Unlike CPR, you are permitted to mix and match different modules in BLS. It is all based on your specific needs as well as the fields that you work in. One and two rescuer modules for children, infants and adults consist of:

• The use of an AED or Automatic External Defibrillator

• Rescue breathing techniques for victims

• Use of a bag-mask device to open up the airway

• The ability to relieve a choking victim when there is an obstruction

BLS modules do not consist of other first aid topics such as broken bones, burns, or bleeding. So you will need to take a different course to become certified in those areas.

Becoming Certified In BLS

It used to be the only way you could become certified in BLS is in a classroom setting. Now the courses are only 3-4 hours long and can be taken in a classroom but some of the coursework can be finished online. This will save you a great deal of time in the long run.
